21 Days And Spring Will Arrive!

Winter is nearly in the rearview mirror with only 21 days until spring arrives!

And with March 13th the day that the clocks move ahead giving us more daylight!

Yes, it is coming.

Did you know that you could grow celery from the celery stalk? I read that you could so I tried it!

It is from an organic celery stalk that is cut off then placed in water. You have to keep the water level up as it evaporates!

OMGoodness it worked!

It has since been transplanted into high-quality sphagnum moss rather than the water & it keeps growing!
The green is a gorgeous limey green & adds life to the kitchen.

Sewing Away...

Buttermilk Basin has a free BOM sew along with a banner that is sewing themed.
And you know that sewing makes my heart sing!
How sweet is this!?!

Stacey West of Buttermilk has designed it to have a new oval each month!
I placed velcro (a Canadian invention) in the oval to exchange it monthly.

Here is January's oval.
The mystery oval is revealed on the 2nd week of each month.

Here is February's oval!

I placed January's above with a magnet glued to the back.
I will display them on my sewing room metal shelf!
I keep my sewing room door closed when the company arrives so this is what is viewed by guests.
It is a fun BOM!

Bill purchased the tulip & hyacinth bulbs at the grocery store to add some spring colour indoors.
Looking out the window behind them we still have loads of snow.
The geraniums at the window are starting to bud, they too feel the energy of the spring days ahead!

Our 8-year-old granddog 'Lois' is always being mistaken for a male, so I made her this pink batik scarf & mailed it off to Alberta for her.

I saved this tape out of clothing that I had to personalize her scarf. I think the Lois bull looks like a dog!

Here is Lois, styling her new spring pink scarf!

She does look pretty in pink! xXx

Big Project!!

The big project that I'm doing is called the Modernational Bear Paw Quilt.
It has been on my to-do list.
I'm nearly done with the 56 - 7" bear paw blocks!

The 43 pieces of cut fabric to put this together is 1 1/2" with the 'pads' being 2 1/2".
Sew much sewing...
Wait until you see the bear, it is what made me want to do this quilt & I'm so happy that it is the next step of sewing. I'll post it when the bear appears!

I was looking through Replacements LTD, and can upon these Williamsburg brown sherbert dishes!
They were $4.99 ea!

The brown glass compliments the Friendly Village dishes! I just love this glassware find!

Bill captured this photo of a fox in our backyard, moving along our breaker wall, just gorgeous!!
I love living alongside nature.

The ice storm was beautiful to view from inside the house but dangerous for walking.

The potting shed had birch trees resting on its roof, it sprung up when the ice melted off but the tree next to it will need some tree grooming!

The carousel diner was closed due to ice build-up.

Bill built this transparent feeder & we wondered who was taking the peanuts out of the glass jar!

The woodpecker! lol He ate the peanuts there & left the empty shells! lol

The ice storms that we've had in the last few weeks have taken down more birch & poplar trees.
Now we are back to snow days. This too will pass with the coming of spring so I'm just going to enjoy the days as they happen.

Thank you for popping in for a visit, I hope you are enjoying this season as much as I am & looking forward to the next wonderful season of spring!

This week I heard this saying...

Our genes load the gun - our choices pull the trigger.

Something to think about as we steer to make healthy choices!

Stay safe & healthy.

So Much Snow - 38 Days Until Spring!

 Winter has found us!

There is so much snow in the northern part of New Brunswick, it is rather peaceful to look at as a huge blanket of pure white covering what is to come this spring!

The view out the dining room window shows how high the snow has gotten, the deck is no longer seen!
Thank heavens it is not attached to the sunporch as it must weigh a ton with all that snow!

It is beginning to fill up at the great room window too! The backyard wrap-around deck railing is barely visible & you can see a glimpse of it by the drape.

The blue-muffin bush will have a good drink come March thaw!

The front porch is attached to the house so it has to stay clean! It is getting harder to put the snow anywhere now, Bill is taller & can reach higher so he's been doing it lately.

The pond is going to have a big filling this spring, remember when winter froze & there was still water in the pond? The trenches are going to be flowing heavily with the thaw!

The Emerald green trees that the kids planted several years ago are wrapped in snow fencing to help keep them together with the snow/ice that moves through here from the open bay.
The rose bush at the white trellis, is going to get a good drink too with the thaw!

Bill has been plowing & blowing the snow as far as he can to keep the parking area open.

His shop is getting piled around too! The pond is behind his shop & the water should drain to that area.
In just four months the toads will be mating & the night air will be filled with their mating songs.

This is the feeding area that Bill fills up for the wee animals to help them get through our harsh winter.

We wondered where the peanuts were going from a new feeder that Bill made this year & what a surprise to see a woodpecker coming & going to get peanuts!

Bill was puzzled to see just empty shells in the glass container!

The animal would enter through the hole then into the container so you could watch!
My girlfriend Liz gave me the pattern so many years ago. Her husband Bob had made some on their property & I love it! So Bill, handsome & handy... he finally made me one! xXx

You can see our bullet propane tanks but what you can't see is the path on the other side of this snowbank. Those are large propane tanks that the house generator works off of in case of power outages.

The dog run area is just a tunnel of snow now that goes to Bill's shop.

This is the view from my sewing room. Very peaceful to view!
I've been sewing there every day!

This oval fits nicely in a hanger that I made for my sewing room door!

The center of the 'O' has velcro on it & every month Buttermilk Basin has a free BOM to fill that 'O'.

Here it is hanging on my sewing room door! Sewing does spark JOY in me & I enjoy creating through it with colour & design with different textiles of cotton & wool.

The Buttermilk Basin FB group did this little quilt, I added the pink heart border to it & some will hearts. I used scraps from the Christmas sock fabric with the metallic fabric & loved the result!

I also played with my Pfaff 720 & did some gold hearts around the border. The machine does beautiful stitches & I need to start using more than straight/zigzag stitches with it. I do use the buttonhole stitch a lot to sew my applique pieces down. This was a scrappy quilt for Valentine 2022.

I made the grapevine wreath many years ago & have added a gold heart one inside it. It hangs in the foyer & I'm happy to see a warm red colour amongst all the cool white snow right now.

These two rabbits are about 30 years old now. The shoes were Mitch & Nick's when they were babies.
The red is velvet & they too sit in the foyer on the painted oak bench.
I'm so proud of Bridget & Baxter for just sitting on the bench with them & not chewing them up!

I got a phone call from my son Donald that my mom had passed away.
She had been in a full care home for many years with her dementia & several strokes.

This was a good day with her & the last time I saw her was in the summer of  2017.

This was my mom in 2020, she was confined to a wheelchair after the last stroke & her quality of life was one of an infant.
The circle of life had closed 1932-2022
Rest in peace momma.

Thank you for stopping by today.
It has been a difficult week for me but the sun is shining & my life is a very blessed one with those that love me.

Take care, stay safe in this ever-changing world that we are living in right now.

Jumping January!

Wow, January was a fast month & it ended with a good northeastern snowstorm. It is a good one!

Bill spent his day plowing out our property & the apartment's & friends' property & was ready for a hot lunch/supper every time he returned inside.

The invested time & money for this equipment has been a real blessing for us living here as we age together with both of us having arthritis. Oh, they say the 'Golden Years', we say the 'Rust Years', the movement of the body is the key to staying 'oiled'.

We are out of our lockdown again & I'm happy to get my hair done on Wednesday, my appointment was the first of the lockdown & the top of my hair is 'glow white' with a 2" growth. My hair is my time that I truly enjoy getting done, I started having white hair at the age of 16 & now it is 100% white, not grey, not salt/pepper, white! So the light blonde is just a tone of warm colour to frame my ageing face.

This was our family photo taken a Christmas & as you see we are all together, a very special time as it will not happen again for two years. The kids will come to visit on their own but not the whole family cluster until Christmas 2023.

This was our last family photo with Aunt Alice from Montreal joining in with us at Easter 2019.
I love my family so much & hope to have Aunt Alice here in the warmer/Covid safe visit this year when some of the kids are visiting.

I've been doing some more sewing...those that know me, know that is my happy place to be & create.

I worked on a 2010 kit by Robyn Pandolph called 'It's Snowing Trees'. I saw the hearts & immediately thought of a Valentine table topper!

I did not start it until this quilt top was completed & I was awaiting the backing arrival from Connecting Threads.

The white squares are a Robyn Pandolph fabric, I've never seen her do a nautical print as she is a southern girl from Texas.

I did enjoy working with her fabric design & Kathy Shimitz's Maryland fabric line. I love how the two married together beautifully!

I also got creative with Edyta Sitar's free pattern from her website patterns & used up some more of the 2 1/2" squares with it. I did wool handles & used a whole package of beige rickrack to add a cottage charm to the little runner.

Photobombed again by Rexton!

Here's the little runner & it fits perfectly on Bill's bedside table!
With an orphan block from the quilt, I made a small accent pillow with fabric on one side...

And crocheted a granny square to fit the other side with a zipper closure on the bottom!

See where the colour combination came from for the pillow?!

OK, back to the table topper!
It was done with a quilt-as-you-go technique & I reversed the other side for a St. Patrick's Day table topper! It was done with metallic fabrics to add to the pot of gold feel!

I had purchased this fabric a Joanne's in Flordia, the year we visited Liz & Bob at their place.
It was one of those precious fabrics that were hard to cut to pieces but the four large 16" squares were a perfect showing of this fun fabric!

The 44 round red dots were done in wool as the others that I prepared from the kit seemed flat & I wanted the red bright.

The green metallic border is a Christmas fabric that works beautifully with the print, mimicking the movement within it.

Bridget was getting into the Valentine spirit too! This tulle collar was designed for one of the geese on the porch but the storms are too heavy right now.

Baxter was so jealous of Bridget that he too wanted his photo taken. lol

And she sat patiently awaiting his photoshoot on a warm Valentine mini quilt.
A little Boston terrier distraction to make you smile!

I changed out the cornerstones that were to be whimsical stars to my embroidered potted willows & I used up some of those red fabric dots around them!

It was a few nights of stitching the stems & leaves from the pot & was so worth it to add texture to the corners of this topper! The pot & stem are done with wool scraps too!

I left the cornerstones plan but did use a metallic thread in my bobbin to add more glitz to the back.

I really was glad to see this fabric used in a project that will be used year after year now!

Here is the finished table topper on the dining room table!

I pulled out some Valentine decor & just love how the red warms the room up!
The Dalmation paper puppies have been with me for years when we had Nichele our girl Dal for 13 years. I had had two other Dalmations before her, Oreo & Sparky. Bill purchased Nichele for me as a surprise & what surprised him was how stubborn that gorgeous dog was & she was to be my last.
Boston terriers would fill our hearts now & they are true companion dogs with personality!

Look out the window, see the railing? The snowdrift on the deck is now two feet above the railing!
I left the Restoration Hardware birch lights & wreath up & decorated the garland for Valentine's Day!

The beaded ornaments are from La Cache in London several years ago. I would go later for the sales as it is a pricey store to purchase from having such unique products. Three birds were purchased there...

Two resin/metal cupids with roses & a heart locket that I still have not put our small facial pics in yet!

So sweet, they usually hang in a wreath but this is so fitting for them!

Cupids, roses, & hearts! Happy Valentine's Day to you!!

I'm working on a BOW called All Around the Neighbourhood - A Sampler Quilt but I can only show the blocks on the Fabric Cupboard Sew-a-long site. I'll post a photo of the finished neighbourhood when it is done!

Thank you for stopping by for a visit!
I hope you are warm & cozy this winter season wherever you are.
I'll post more Valentine decor around the house, you saw the dining room today. ;)
Wishing you a great week & health & happiness always!
