Election Time Is Coming...

It is such a privilege in this country to be able to vote. So much has been done over the century to have just that privilege. It was in 1917 that woman could vote in Canada, yes for 101 years we've earned that right & so many do not mark a ballet on that day male or female.
I have taken the time to meet Brian Gallant & Madison the granddaughter was there also to work the camera & at 15 years of age have her first encounter of politics with grammy.

Maddy did do a great job with the camera when Brian Gallant came our way!
I spoke to him about my love for New Brunswick as ' I Come From Away' & being a senior now I try to stay physically active in the BSA Community Centre however it is on a boarded up bowling alley & some government help to give us a hand up would be grateful...

He then introduced me to his lovely new wife.

And as we began talking, he walked away & never answered my question about seniors getting help.

We both looked for him, he was off & gone to someone that he was to meet at 1pm that day of his gas station arrival.

A photo with a fellow senior that I workout with at the FIT 4 50+, she's been working out since I came here in 2009!

Then last week I had Jake Stewart come to my door. He asked ME what my concerns where & what I was not happy with. Roads always come up as ours take a beating from loaded peat moss transports at all hours of the day & night. Then I spoke of the shape of the BSA Community Centre & he was shocked to know that area even existed!
He had gotten a couple of grants for the centre's roof, kitchen, & bathroom updates but never knew of us behind the double doors.

Today he came to the centre & viewed the state of the floors & back wall. He agreed it does have to be updated & if he's elected it will happen.
So many of us are hoping/voting for Jake Stewart!
I Googled him & was amazed at all his humanitarian accomplishments, this man really is a bright star & one to watch in the years ahead.
He's working off a platter not a plate & I don't see him slowing down anytime soon but I hope he is careful as bright stars burn out the fastest.

Seraphie & Jake Stewart talking over what is needed. These two have worked together in the past on the centre's updates.

Me with Jake, he's giving me a hard time about the 'Liberal red coat' but it was a raincoat & much needed with the rains from the hurricane remnants. He gives me the thumbs up knowing that he has my vote!

After the business talk was done he just could not resist giving the bag a kick...

                                                                               Or two!!

Jake Stewart has the largest area to cover in New Brunswick, from Escuminac, where he was heading after our meeting, to just outside Fredericton! That is a lot of door knocking & I'm sure glad that he knocked on my door to introduce himself!

Thank you for stopping in for a visit & please take the time to vote. It is your privilege & your right!

Remembering Dad - February 4 1927- September 17 2018

A day does not go by that my dad is not thought about, he was a huge part of my life & is still a huge part of who I am. Let me share his history and few life achievements about dad with you.

Dad was born in Hungary on February 6th 1927 but we have always celebrated & all his government papers state February 4th 1927, his name would be changed from Tibor to Tebor. My Grandfather Joseph Mitro had arrived in Canada before my Grandmother Mary Mitro & was waiting for his three sons and wife to begin their life together in Guelph Ontario Canada.
They entered Canada as many immigrants had back then,  through Pier 21 in Halifax.

Grandma Mitro with Joseph Jr., Gaza (known as Fred), &  baby Tibor (known as Skip), my father.

After living in Guelph the family would move to Ottawa in a large 21 room manor on a huge lot that would also have a small farm on it, complete with a cow called Bosee. They would have to remove the animals from the area as the neighbours complained & bylaws were inforced but the party that took place doing that is another story. Grandma would have eight children with six living when Grandpa died at the age of 42. Grandma Mitro, not speaking much English, if any, would change the house into a rooming house to have income for the family of five boys & one 7-year-old daughter, she would then raise on her own. My dad would be just 15 at that time.

Dad was too young to be a soldier in WWII & Grandpa Mitro was working in the factory making the Lancaster Bombers, he was able to get work for dad there. Dad is the one at the top of the scaffolding with legs crossed for this iconic photo!
It would be working there that he would get his nickname 'Skip'  as he was always skipping off somewhere other than the task at hand, hence Skip! lol

Dad was always thinking & inventing different things & in 1958 he would be in the London Free Press for just that! His flying saucer which now resides with me in New Brunswick.

His love of planes would become his passion for flying his plane, he would tinker with planes in the shop that he built with cinder blocks & overhead doors from Richard-Wilcox in London Ontario. He would purchase the property on Little Hill Street in London Ontario when mom would be just 2 months pregnant with me in 1957. This would be the only home I would know, complete with dad's shop & the frequent smell of welding & metal. This is where my story begins...

This Stetson 108 - CF - LAF would be such fun growing up. Sundays were spent at the Firth farm on Westminster Concession, the field had a runway strip that many small planes would fly out off.
I loved being buckled into this four-seater on weekends that dad would take me with him.
He once put me in the front seat with him & to let me steer the plane. That is one of the peak experiences I remember inside the plane.

Dad invented a towing device to tow gliders and on June 29th 1969, his life would change forever.
As he towed the glider up & the glider released, he came over the airport area & released his metal cable tow rope... or he thought he did, either way, it was not released & caught a telephone pole.
This was The Summer Of 69', I received a phone call to go to the hospital & my neighbour took me, I would be just 11 years old then. My life would change too, that too is another story, and a huge part of my strength today.

The owner of the glider made it safely down to find that my dad did not. He did, however, survive this horrific crash & would remain in the hospital till March 1970. He severed his spine in several areas & would be confined to a wheelchair at the age of 42.
When he went home from the hospital so did I (I was living with my mother, she had left when I was 7 years old) & now back home on Little Hill Street, our life together after this would be one of many challenges.
I had a very hard time getting him in & out of the house, so much stress that I would drop him & loss control of the wheelchair. I was just 12 now & had to become his caregiver too. It was so difficult as I was alone, just he & I with so much to adapt to with wheelchair living.
He tinkered with many ways of getting into the house with ramps & pulleys but it too was still a lot of work with my pushing him up the ramp when I was home & his pulling himself up the ramp when I was at school.

He would still go into his shop & work away on ideas & then it all came to him, the idea of independence - the invention of the SKIP-LIFT!

This is his invention in 1972 & he would hold the patent for this for Canada & USA.
He would have these lifts made & shipped coast to coast in Canada.
He would also have made & patent hand controls for driving. He had his independence back & in doing so changed the lives of many handicapped persons.

So many have asked how our children are now third generation elevator technicians, they know about my husband Bill being one, now you have met the man that started it all.

Dad, you have been gone for 18 years & would be so proud of your family with the influence that you've given us all.

As I had told you many times when you were alive & when I spoke at your eulogy...
"You Are The Wind Beneath My Wings'

Thank you, Daddy, thank you.
Much loved & missed by your daughter.

Drywall, Ventilation, IKEA Kitchen Counter Tops

WOW!!

There has been a lot being done on the inside this week!

The outside looks about the same as last week. The building will be surrounded with cement around the building & a 6 ft area to the front of the building. After the cement has hardened then the brick will finish the front of the building.

The venting pipes are being installed in each unit, fresh air in, old air out!

The units one by one are being drywalled. There has been so much drywall installed!!

The venting pipes will have drywall bulkheads made to cover them.

It looks brighter inside with the white drywall.

The drywalling should finish & the tapping & mudding will begin!

Bill's office has a washroom & an electrical room within it. The new 400 amp service will be installed there next week.

The Le Salon/Common Room has all the drywalling done!

The hallway is busy & dark these days, soon there will be the overhead LED lights.

So much wiring has been done this week too!

The soundproofing insulation is really noticeable in the hallway! It is also installed between the units.

Bill arrived tonight with the seven IKEA countertops for the unit's kitchens.

These are the small countertop units that are installed next to the stove. You can see the neutral colour of the countertops in this photo.

The mudding mix has arrived on skids! I'm glad that we have Bill's shop to store the supplies as needed. Today the countertops were added to the storing of the things to be done. I can't wait to see the kitchens come together!

Thank you for stopping in to see the progress this week. The apartments are looking great & so much more to be done before the snow flys. Our son Mitchell sent photos today to show the snow on his Calgary truck this morning! We're into our summer weather here these days & enjoying the beautiful sunsets that come with the beautiful days.

This was last nights & tonight's sunset was even more vibrant & red. I just love the sunsets here!

Have a wonderful weekend wherever you are!

Old Tom Passes Away 1999-2018 RIP

Old Tom Cat in his 20th year passed away after a stroke on September 3, 2018.
I was with him when he died, petting him & reassuring him that it was OK to let go and he did.

                                                            RIP -Tom Cat 1999-2018

This cat truly did have nine lives & an adventurous life with me & was much loved.
I'll miss him dearly as will those that knew him over the years too.

Pets sure leave paw marks in your heart.

Our house is now left with only black & white pets. The two tuxedo cats & the pair of Boston's.
They too, I'm sure will miss old Tom.

Bill was home & we buried him in the shade garden between two birch trees. He's at peace & will be much missed & talked about for years to come. A loving memory for sure.

Moving On, Inside & Out!

Another Inspection has passed!
The insulation inspection passed & as the inspector was leaving he gave me two thumbs up!

The front entry door is now installed & the bottom half of the siding is going to be a light coloured horizontal stone. This was the first time I saw the stained glass that I chose for the building & it took my breath away, I love the look of it! It is hard to choose when it is a picture in a book.

The upper front vertical siding is now down & it gives a light & bright look to the building. The stonework on the bottom will compliment the front design.

This is the side entry door, the one that is located in the middle of the building.

The same stained glass door pattern is repeated in every exterior door.

I'll show how this is going to be finished up with photos as it progresses!

The back exterior door, this door is at the end of the long hallway.

You can do a visual on the length of that hallway from the exterior!

The other side of the buildings exterior length. The side door is the halfway mark.
There will be 5 feet of cement going down both sides of the building, creating an outside small area for sitting & easy ploughing come winter & it will be upon us next season!

The residents will be warm & cosy with all the insulation that is now completed inside & out!

I'll be adding drapery insulation behind the patio doors in the common room as well as the two windows in there too.

The side entry, the storage units will be inside this area.

This week the interior insulation will be installed on in interior walls.
                                                         Then the drywall begins!

This is the electrical room off of Bill's office space. The electrical lines where run underground & then into the building. Giving a clean sight line to the apartment building's appearance.

Bill's small office washroom, it is in scale to his small office! lol

This is the huge bundle of noise reduction, fire-retardant insulation that's being installed next.

The ceiling has fire retardant drywall, protecting the fire retardant ceiling insulation, that's protecting the steel roof. The code is being followed to the letter, giving us a double thumbs up!

So many of the residents' friends & family will enter from this door & I'm having a hard time thinking of the exterior door colour. It's not something I have to decide right away but it does have to be done soon. I'm waiting for the stone to be installed to a have a more complete look.

Thanks for popping in this beautiful weekend here in northeastern New Brunswick to see how the apartment is coming. It's on schedule, over budget, & beautiful!

Have a wonderful weekend wherever you are!
